Tarzan the Untamed introduced the lost civilization of Xuja, foreshadowing a pattern in later Tarzan novels. During a tremendous thunderstorm, Tarzan kills a leopard, symbolizing the return of the Lord of the Jungle--and this is just the first chapter. Since the novel was first published in serial form Redbook — March through Augustthere is some repetitive information as to what has already transpired in order to bring readers up to speed. I like how Tarzan can't seem to get rid of the British Officer and German woman, he just keeps going back to them.

Seeing the plane go down, Tarzan once more sets out to rescue them. This portrayal, while perhaps understandable in wartime, ultimately ruined the market for his writing in Germany, where the character of Tarzan had formerly been quite popular. Tarzan is captured on the battle-ground and taken prisoner by the Veltopismakusians. Recovering, Tarzan once more comes to the rescue of his companions, aided by the lion he had saved earlier.

The result is arguably ERBs best Tarzan novel, past paced and with a prose style that rises above his average effort. But nothing is going to stop Tarzan from hunting down every last one of the invaders who destroyed his home and killed his wife.
